City SC Utah vs. (8/4) Utah Surf Central Region: Mountain Conference – Wasatch Division Saturday, May 10 7 p.m. (MDT) Dumke Field at Westminster College -Salt Lake City, Utah Watch
Two familiar foes open play in the Wasatch Division Saturday evening when the No. 8 ranked Utah Surf travels to Dumke Field to face City SC Utah in the club’s first WPSL match under its new crest.
Entering its eighth WPSL season, City SC Utah—formerly the Utah Red Devils—is the most tenured team in the six-team Wasatch Division. A down year for City SC and coach Dennis Burrows, the club finished 2024 in fifth position in the Wasatch Division standings, going 2-1-7. Sadie Santiago (Southern Utah University) led the club in scoring with four goals, followed by Zoe Moses Hernandez (2019) and Michaela Didericksen (2021) with three goals each. City SC Utah is 20-8-20 all-time in WPSL play.
Ranked No. 8 Nationally and No. 4 in the Central Region in the SouthStar Systems Preseason Rankings, Utah Surf is coming off its best WPSL performance in the club’s history, scoring two historic wins over rivals Utah Avalanche, going 8-1-1 enroute to its first Wasatch Division title. The club’s only loss came at the hands of division runners up, La Roca FC, in Week Two. McKenzie Evans (2015) led the team in scoring with 10 of the 34 goals the Surf scored in 2024, followed by three-time All-Wasatch player, Danika Serassio (2018) with seven. Backstopped by Wasatch Division Defensive Player of the Year, Lauren Rodriguez (2024), the Surf conceded a division-low nine goals—three of which came in its heartbreaking 3-2 loss to La Roca in the beginning of the season. Under the leadership of Wasatch Division Coach of the Year, Brad Dare, the Surf responded to the early season loss with three decisive victories, outscoring opponents 11-1 before splitting points with La Roca in a 3-3 draw at home. Entering its fifth WPSL season, the Utah Surf are 14-6-16 all-time.
Utah Surf won both games in the home and away series with City SC Utah last season, picking up a decisive 5-0 win at its home ground, American Fork High School. Evans tallied two goals on the night, along with Solena Sellers (Utah State University), Kiersi Fietkau (Southern Utah University), and Serassio in the home win. On a high after beating the Utah Avalanche for the second time in the season two days earlier, the Surf waltzed into Dumke Field and handed City its worse defeat of the year, winning 6-0 behind braces by Evans and Makinna Winterton (2023), and individual goals by Sellers and Regan Dare (University of Colorado Colorado Springs).
The two clubs close out the season in the Week Eight return match, Thursday, June 26 at American Fork High School.
