WPSL'S NEWEST EXPANSION CLUB KICKS OFF IN HIGHLY COMPETITVE CALIFORNIA MARKET

 


 

OKLAHOMA CITY (1/14/2025)The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced its most recent expansion franchise for the 2025 season, the San Diego Dons, furthering the 27-year WPSL legacy in the California market.

 

 

“By joining the WPSL, we intend to bring a competitive team to an already highly competitive league,” Dawn Lee, San Diego Dons co-head coach, said. “We feel this is just the starting point that will kick off a long tenured team that has the potential to impact the community as well as the soccer world for years to come.” 

 

 

With the announcement, the San Diego Dons enter its inaugural season with the mission of emphasizing the development of its players and creating a platform that thrives on competition and merit-based achievement. The club  aims to develop, recruit, and train college players and foster an environment of competition and growth, offering rigorous training and high expectations within a safe, empowering environment, fostering growth both on and off the field. 

 

 

 

 

“Our vision is to build upon the women’s game that has been enriched by the NWSL and national team by developing a program that fosters growth from our youth all the way up through college to the pros,” Lee said. 

 

 

Lee and co-head coach, Ada Greenwood, bring more than 60 combined years-experience coaching at the youth, college, and professional levels. After a legendary playing career at UC San Diego and during the early years of the WPSL, Lee entered the coaching ranks earning numerous league, city, and regional titles over her nationally recognized 27-year career. Greenwood coached at the Division I level for 19 years, reaching the NCAA Tournament 12 times, among other youth and collegiate coaching achievements. 

 

 

The San Diego Dons’ entry into the WPSL furthers the legacy of the league in the Southern California region, which dates back to the league’s founding in 1998. 

 

 

The WPSL will unveil its official conference alignment for the 2025 season at its Annual General Meeting in Oklahoma City later this month.

The WPSL is set to open its 27th season in May 2025 to retain itself as the most tenured women’s league in North America. The WPSL continues to operate as the largest women’s soccer league in the world. An all-time high of 141 teams in 34 U.S. states competed in the league’s first division of the 2024 season.
