ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2023) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today that RNY FC has officially joined the league and will compete in the 2023 season. With the announcement, the WPSL strengthens its roots on the upper East Coast as RNY FC becomes the league’s third expansion in the region this year.

“[The WPSL] has been home to many top players with history in Rochester and we’re excited to showcase this talent in our community again,” Jen Hoock, RNY FC executive director, said. “Empowering our players with a voice and a platform will share importance with providing a space to play at an advanced competitive level.”

RNY FC joins the WPSL with a desire to expand the women’s game in Western New York. The club looks to create more opportunities for women to have a consistent platform with high-level competition that encourages their ambitions to discover their potential.

“This is a remarkable time to be a female soccer player, and I’m proud to support some of the advancements we’re making to promote women,” Hoock said.

RNY FC has been in operation for nearly six decades after launching in 1966 as the Rochester Mavericks. The club held the Maverick branding until 1998 before becoming the Rochester Junior Rhinos (1998) and then Empire United Soccer Academy (2008). The club’s new identity was birthed last year after aligning with Rochester NY Football Club – Rochester’s MLS Next Pro team.

With its new partnership solidified, RNY FC has secured a true Youth-to-Pro pathway that will create future developmental opportunities as the club and this alliance progresses. RNY FC currently fields teams within the Girls Academy, MLS Next Academy, and a Premier program that serves youth players throughout Western New York.

For its inaugural WPSL season, RNY FC has named Katrin Kaarna as its head coach. Kaarna brings an extensive background with over 20 years of coaching experience in Europe and the United States that displays the tools it takes to compete on a professional and international level. Kaarna holds UEFA PRO and USSF A licenses, a master’s degree from the University of Tartu in Estonia in Exercise and Sport Sciences, and has worked at all levels of player development while coaching the Estonian Women’s National Team.
