THE WPSL RETURNS TO ATLANTA-METRO WITH 2023 EXPANSION TEAM

Published May 18, 2022

CANTON, Ga. (May 18, 2022) – The Women’s Premier Soccer League announced today, Georgia Impact will join the league for the 2023 season. The announcement comes as the league’s first 2023 expansion release and marks the WPSL’s official return to the Atlanta metro area.

This next step provides a great opportunity for our players and staff as a pathway of their continued development of soccer players and people,” Shane Moore, Georgia Impact chief executive officer, said. “From the community aspect, we will build yet another collaboration with our local city and county that will bring the exciting sport of soccer for our North Georgia residents to support.”

For 50 years, Impact Soccer has been providing opportunities for players, on both the competitive and recreational levels, ranging from toddler ages to 18 years old. Through its competitive club academy and select programs, 90 percent of Impact’s senior girls advance to collegiate programs and opportunities.

The club has named its director of coaching, Robert Roddie as its head coach for the 2023 season. Roddie will lead the WPSL side with a staff of coaches including Christina Sakoron, Ross Keenan, Fernando DeBarros and Wesley Lutz. Roddie and his staff see this WPSL partnership as an accomplishment for the club and are eager to have former players return to the Impact roster and provide its youth a goal to strive for.

Everyone at Georgia Impact Soccer Club is thrilled to join the largest women’s soccer league in the world,” Roddie said. “To be able to provide a pathway for our youth players to play and compete at the next level has been a goal of ours for a few years and the WPSL has made this a reality.”

The club continues its mission of making a positive impact in the community by staying involved through the outreach of the club and its charitable arm, the Cherokee Youth Foundation – an organization that supports the youth of Cherokee County, Ga. through opportunities in sports and other character-building activities.

"The City of Canton is thrilled to learn of the hard work of our partners at Georgia Impact to land an expansion team from the Women's Premier Soccer League," Billy Peppers, Canton city manager, said. "We look forward to rooting on Georgia Impact SC and sharing the beauty of Canton with soccer enthusiasts across the country."
